Once the
hearth slab had cured long enough, I began the process of building
the oven's hearth and walls. The oven proper is made of firebrick.
There are approximately 90 bricks laid on edge to create the hearth, and
then the bricks were put in to create the walls of the oven.
Putting in the hearth bricks was not difficult, but was, to this
point, the most time-consuming and tedious part.
The hearth bricks are set in a pre-mixed high temp mortar. The
mortar was spread on the hearth slab and then I used a notched
trowel to even it out. There is no mortar between the bricks.
Next came the walls for the oven. The bricks you see standing up in
the picture above, are the door jamb bricks. From these I started
putting in the walls.
