Once the hearth slab had cured long enough, I began the process of building the oven's hearth and walls. The oven proper is made of firebrick. There are approximately 90 bricks laid on edge to create the hearth, and then the bricks were put in to create the walls of the oven.

Putting in the hearth bricks was not difficult, but was, to this point, the most time-consuming and tedious part.

The hearth bricks are set in a pre-mixed high temp mortar. The mortar was spread on the hearth slab and then I used a notched trowel to even it out. There is no mortar between the bricks.

Next came the walls for the oven. The bricks you see standing up in the picture above, are the door jamb bricks. From these I started putting in the walls.
